One big change in our lives. As of February 1, Paul has retired as Associate Director of Through the Looking Glass and Co-Director of the National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families. It was a combination of our health issues, trying to limit exposure to others since our immune systems are fairly compromised, and the federal funding that supported Paul's position for the past 23 years has now ended. It seemed like a good time to step down, and turn our attention to the time we have and enjoy that. Of course, since both of us have worked for non-profit organizations most of our lives, we don't have pensions. However, we do have Social Security, our own savings and a paid-off house.
Although Paul's lab numbers continue to improve, the oncologists have advised Paul that it's time to undergo stem cell harvesting in preparation for an future stem cell transplant. The harvesting will take place at Stanford in late March. It’s not such a big deal, although there are some unpleasant procedures and side-effects as part of the pre-harvesting procedures. The worst part is probably having to go back and forth to Stanford for many days in a row. Depending on traffic, that's at least a couple hour drive each way -- even though it's only 30 miles away.
Tim is still struggling with nausea and appetite, even two weeks after his last chemo. He has one more week before his next chemo, so we're hoping he'll start feeling better before another round of side-effects hits.
